A Day in the Life of Gwen

People often ask what I do.

The better question is what inspires me.

While much of my life is devoted to leading organizations, developing community initiatives, producing documentaries, and exploring new ideas, I've always believed that a meaningful life is built just as much outside the office as within it.

The experiences that have shaped me most haven't always happened in boardrooms or classrooms. They've happened on mountain trails, around dinner tables, beneath star-filled skies, and in conversations with people whose lives are very different from my own.

The reminder that while our languages, traditions, and landscapes may differ, kindness is understood everywhere.

"The world has been my classroom, and every journey has reminded me that our greatest adventures are measured not by the places we've seen, but by the lives we've touched."

My Inspiration

A Heart for Service

Finding Peace Outdoors

Finding Peace Outdoors

Long before I founded Blue Mosaic, service was simply part of who I was.

Whether volunteering in my local community or collaborating with organizations around the world, I've always believed that some of life's greatest rewards come from helping others discover their own potential.

Service isn't something I do.

It's how I try to live.

Nature has always been my reset button.

When I'm not immersed in a new project, you'll usually find me outside—playing golf or tennis, hiking mountain trails, cycling country roads, or wandering through Shenandoah National Park, where I proudly maintain an annual pass.

Some of my favorite days are spent hiking with my foster dogs while photographing Virginia's mountains, forests, waterfalls, and changing seasons.

Those quiet moments remind me that slowing down is often the best way to move forward.

A Citizen of the World

A Citizen of the World

Travel has been one of my greatest teachers.

I've been fortunate to live, work, study, or travel in more than 65+ countries across all seven continents, and every journey has expanded my understanding of people, cultures, and communities.

Despite our differences, I've discovered something remarkably consistent wherever I've gone:

People want safe children.

Strong families.

Meaningful work.

And hope for tomorrow.

Those shared values continue to guide both my professional work and my personal life.

The Ocean Always Calls

Extraordinary Adventures

A Citizen of the World

I've always been drawn to open water.

Over the years, I challenged myself with several long-distance ocean swims, covering four to five miles along both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

One memorable swim even earned me a lifetime ban from Wrightsville Beach after I unintentionally outswam three lifeguards—including the head lifeguard—who came searching for me.

Today it's one of my favorite stories to laugh about.

Extraordinary Adventures

Extraordinary Adventures

Some of my favorite memories have taken me far beyond the ordinary.

I've wandered through the rainforests of Sarawak on the island of Borneo, trekked into the jungles of Central Africa to observe a family of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, explored the underwater Blue Holes of Andros, Bahamas, and skydived above the breathtaking Namib Desert near Swakopmund, Namibia.

Adventure has taught me humility.

Every place I've explored has reminded me how much there still is to learn.

Around the Table

Extraordinary Adventures

Extraordinary Adventures

One of the best ways to understand a culture is through its food.

Whenever I travel, I love visiting neighborhood markets, sampling local cuisine, and enrolling in cooking classes whenever possible.

Some of the most meaningful conversations I've ever had didn't happen in conference rooms.

They happened around kitchen tables.

Food has a remarkable way of bringing people together.

Curiosity and Tchotchkes

Forever Curious

I don't think curiosity has an expiration date.

Every country, every conversation, every challenge, and every friendship has become another piece of the mosaic that continues to shape my life.

I still ask questions.

I still seek new adventures.

And I still believe that every person we meet has something to teach us.

My Favorite Souvenir

People often ask what I've brought home from traveling the world.

It's never been the souvenirs.

It's the perspectives.

The friendships.

The lessons.

The reminder that while our languages, traditions, and landscapes may differ, kindness is understood everywhere.

Living Lightly

Sustainability isn't simply part of my work.

It's part of my lifestyle.

For many years, I intentionally chose to live with a lighter environmental footprint, spending eight years without owning a car and seven years without carrying a cell phone in recent years..

Those choices taught me something unexpected:

The less we carry, the more present we become.
